Groups And Meetings

Setting up chairs and making coffee is important. Meetings ensure there is a place for the alcoholic who still suffers to find us, attending a regular home group ensures it will be there when needed. Find out how to be of service at the meeting level.

Chicago Area

Join an Area Committee each of which focus on specific functions that allow our Area to carry the message. The Area meets every other month and all members of the fellowship are invited to attend. Learn more about how to get involved.

Area Office

There are many volunteer opportunities at the office, such as answering the phone, preparing mailings or re-stocking the bookstore. Learn more about getting involved.

Work with new and struggling alcoholics
12-step volunteers answer serve as points of contact when new or struggling alcoholics call the hotline looking for help. Phone volunteers will reach out to you to do a 12-step call when an alcoholic calls the hotline looking for help. If you have 1 year of sobriety, you can be listed on our 12-step Volunteer List.

Answer phones Off-hours
Off-hours phones volunteers answer calls from the hotline. Many callers are new or struggling alcoholics or visitors from out-of-town looking for help getting to meetings. If you have 6 months of sobriety, you can be trained to do this job.

Be a temporary contact for people coming out of hospitals and treatment facilities
Volunteers for Bridging the Gap act as a first contact for alcoholics being released from hospitals and treatment facilities. If you have 6 months of sobriety, you can be trained to do this job.

Chair a meeting in a jail or prison
Volunteers for Correctional Facilities bring meetings into jails or prison facilities for alcoholics who need meetings while incarcerated. If you have 1 year of sobriety, you can apply and be trained to do this job. This job requires an extensive background check and is immensely rewarding.

Chair a meeting in a hospital or treatment facility
Volunteers for Hospital and Treatment Facilities bring meetings into hospitals and facilities for alcoholics who need meetings while in treatment. If you have 1 year of sobriety, you can apply and be trained to do this job.

Help plan conferences and events for AA members
Volunteers for the Committee on Conferences or the All Chicago Open help plan conferences and events for AA members. There is no sobriety requirement.

Provide information about AA to the professional community
Volunteers for Cooperation with the Professional Community help our fellowship educate professionals like doctors, lawyers, employers, and others to understand AA. There is no sobriety requirement to join this committee however speaking to professionals does require special training.

Represent your home group at the District and/or Area level
General Service Representatives attend district meetings to represent their meeting and to bring announcements back to their meeting. Sobriety requirements for GSRs are set by each individual meeting. Area representatives also represent their districts at Area level meetings.

Help make A.A. accessible to everyone
Volunteers on the Accessibility Committee make sure that alcoholics who are differently abled have access to meetings where they can meet and hear the message. This committee also helps meetings become more accessible. There is no sobriety requirement to join this committee.

Help select literature to be made available at the Area level
Volunteers on the Literature Committee review literature offered for purchase at the Area level. There is no sobriety requirement to join this committee.
